Nothing beats the heat like cotton! This is a great work or casual Sunday outfit (I would wear this one to church since it's Sunday).
Don't be scared to wear a bright color on the bottom!

Cotton sweater- J. Crew Factory
Cotton skimmer pants- J. Crew Factory
Teal necklace- Ten Thousand Villages
Nude peep-toe shoes- Fioni for Payless (flats work just as well for this look)
Coach bag- Coach outlet
Green neon earrings- J. Crew outlet $12.00

Since this outfit is all J. Crew Factory, let me again stress that it is affordable (much more so than the retail store, which I can only afford when it's deeply discounted at the end of a season).  The factory store frequently has great items up to 40% off, and in fact this sweater only cost me $15.00! They also give teacher discounts, so bring your work ID!

It's Saturday, so it's time to pull out those dress clothes for a night out on the town! Okay, in reality, Saturday nights at my home usually consist of Red Box and Chinese food, but let's pretend here for a minute, okay?
The key to this look is the details (as is usually the case). Drop-down pearl earrings and nude peep toe shoes let the leopard print dress be the star of the show. As I've said before, red lips elevate your look from everyday to wow! And don't forget the clutch- a large handbag would ruin the dressy element of this look.

Faux pearl earrings- Forever 21 (circa 2007)
Mossimo for Target fit and flare dress- Target $29.99 (this one was purchased on Ebay because Target is sold out)
Vintage clutch- purchased circa 2003 from Outer Banks (proof that holding onto special items is worthwhile)
Nude peep-toe heels- Fioni for Payless- currently on sale for $15.00 (and these are VERY comfortable)!
PS- Don't wear stockings with peep- toe shoes!
Red lipstick- L'oreal British Red (I PROMISE you can do a red lip!)

Today's look is all about using accessories to punch up a look. Mine happen to be green, but any color works! Coral and bright blue are also popular summer choices. Here I have taken a basic t-shirt and skirt and made it "pop" with green.
Hat- Forever 21
Green neon earrings- J. Crew Factory (www.jcrewfactory.com)
Green resin link necklace- $22.00- purchased at Act II in Hilton (Newport News)
White t-shirt and navy linen blend skirt- J. Crew Factory
Green clutch- Target
Green and tan flat sandals-- Target

Remember to shop your own closet for pieces of similar colors! The only "new" item in this look is the necklace- the rest of it I already owned (and purchased on sale- I never pay full price)!

I've written about New York and Company before, but I really find this is a great store for today's modern woman (just skip all the stuff with their logos, like the purses and scarves, etc). Their suits and dresses fit great, and they have a variety of sizes and lengths for both petites and tall. Log onto www.newyorkandcompany.com to preview their looks before going into the store. I do find the store is better to shop than online because of all their sales. Here are my key tips for success at New York and Company:
1. Never shop without a coupon! You can sign up to have them emailed to you or mailed to your house. If you can't score a coupon before you go, then consider going to the store, buying something small, and signing up for the coupons then.
2. Start with the work wear. Their dresses, work pants, blazers, and tops are impeccable and always look pulled together.
3. ALWAYS check the sale racks. Don't be afraid to shop off-season. Two years ago, I found a denim shirt for $12.00. Guess what? Denim shirts are ALL the rage and cost a minimum of 3x as much now.
4. Check out their accessories. The quality is pretty good and often match the outfits.
5. Skip the work out/lounge wear. The logos are a bit tacky and it's not as fashion forward as other work-out gear.

Top, above: Laced-Front Mixed-Fabric Blouse. $39.95
Why I love this blouse: Lace is on-trend this season. The back is solid and has great coverage as it scoops down.

Chiffon Banded Top $39.95 New York and Company
Why I love this shirt: It's lightweight for summer and can transition to fall. It's got sleeves and floats away from the body. The texture makes it interesting!

New York and Company Colorblock Dress- on sale for $30.00
Why I love this dress: It's got sleeves, but is lightweight. The cut is very light and forgiving. The tie allows you to adjust the fit to your proportions.

Pants, New York and Company. 7th Avenue Suiting  Collection Ankle Pant $34.00

Why I love these pants: I l own these pants in almost every color of the rainbow: white, tan, hot pink, electric blue, and black. Since I'm short, they're the perfect length for me. They look great with a heel!
They flare just a little at the bottom, but not so much that it looks awkward.

Scarf: Made from a man's XL white cotton t-shirt
Teal top: Van Heusen outlet
White Jeans: Matchstick by J. Crew Factory
Brown wedges: Mossimo at Target

Today's look features the super easy and super cheap infinity scarf- a great transition piece for fall or for those chilly, over air-conditioned buildings. This scarf is EASILY made with a men's XL t-shirt. There are many types of t-shirt scarves that can be made (Google or YouTube search "T shirt scarves" for ideas), but I prefer the one-piece infinity scarf. To make this scarf, simply take the t-shirt and lay it out flat. Cut the shirt straight across directly under the armpits, so that you are left with a large tube. Now S-T-R-E-T-C-H the scarf. Put it under your foot and stretch up like it's a resistance band. I even tie it around two door handles that are close together for added stretch. When it's done, voila! I have a great scarf that I can loop around twice. Bonus: I saved the top of the shirt (the neckline and sleeves), and used it to clean my kitchen!

White can be tricky. White bottoms are definitely even trickier. Choose a fitted style with a little bit of stretch, or go for class flared white pants. Either way, you will help stay cool in the heat while looking stylish!

Stay cool in this heat (and work appropriate) with shades of blue. The pants are actually seersucker (and I have a blazer as well). The sweater is a lightweight wool from J. Crew factory. Chunky accents in the necklace and bracelet give the look a little bit of weight. Pearl earrings add a feminine touch.
Sweater- Merino wool- J. Crew Factory
Seersucker pants- Victoria's Secret- purchased in 2003 (similar styles available at Loft or J. Crew)
Bubble necklace- Van Heusen outlet
Bracelet- Act II- $10.00
Brown

My wise dad has always taught me that, "Organization is the key to success," and this mantra has worked its way into my wardrobe choices as well. One of the main keys to looking pulled together is to stay organized- and with just a few minor tweaks, you can be on your way to fashionable everyday!
(photo: Vintage J. Crew blazer- thrift store; Patterned tank- Roxy; Denim shorts- Gap jeans that I purchased in 2008 and recently cut and cuffed into shorts after watching a Youtube tutorial).

1. Plan ahead.
At the minimum, plan your outfit the night before work (or whatever event you have- even it's just running errands)! Make sure it's clean and ironed. I love Dryel for dry-clean only items- it comes with stain removal and is WAY cheaper than professional dry cleaning. Plan out all aspects on your outfit- head to toe. This also includes jewelry and undergarments. If you have a great pair of earrings, place them somewhere the night before where you can put them on in the morning, or even consider sticking them in a pocket of a jacket. That way, you will be sure to wear them. Winter? Make sure you have planned your coat and/or a scarf. Don't forget your shoes- this is a critical element to a complete outfit. My fashion secret? I drive to work in my flats and change to my heels when I get there. That way, I have a pair of comfortable shoes while driving (and errand running later), but I look extra pulled together when I get to work.

2. Shop in Your Own Closet (and Jewelry Box).
Too often, we run out and buy the latest item that ends up sitting in our closet (or drawer) for months. Or worse, we wear the same black pants for the fourth day in a row. Before spending time and money on another black sweater, shop in your own closet. You might be surprised what you find! Who knows, what has gone "out" might now be in fashion again. I recently starting reusing a leather purse that I've had for four years. I purchased it in Florida, and for a time it was too big. But this summer I discovered it's perfect for hauling my camera or snacks!
Don't forget to check your jewelry box for finds. Why haven't you worn that special necklace that has been passed down in your family? Or perhaps it's a bracelet or ring you received as a gift. Don't wait for a "special" occasion- every day is special!

3.  Browse Pinterest and Fashion Magazines for Ideas
Don't assume that you can't pair some of the items you already own because it doesn't seem "safe." Browsing sites like Pinterest.com or Instyle.com can provide tons of inspiration for wardrobe updates. Instyle.com even has a game that you can play where you choose the finishing outfit touch and score points. Not only is it fun, it can really open up eyes to mixing prints and choosing the best accessory to complete a look. Another tip is to find a celebrity whose style you admire and work to emulate that person. Obviously you don't have to go out and buy designer clothes, but use this person's style as a frame of reference. For example, you could be in the fitting room at TJ Maxx trying on a dress. Before you buy it (after checking out all your angles, of course), ask yourself, "Would Gwyneth wear this?" or whoever your icon is. If the answer is a resounding no, rethink the purchase.

4. Find Your Niche in the Fashion World
Perhaps you love bright colored shoes, or you wear scarves everyday. Don't be afraid to find your "thing" and rock it! That being said, don't get stuck in a rut, either. My "thing" is big cocktail rings, beaded necklaces, scarves, and blazers (not all at once, of course). When I go thrifting, I always look for these items, because I know I will wear them. I don't necessarily spend a lot of money on these items, nor do I care if they are in "fashion" because I love them. No one is really wearing beaded necklaces right now (statement necklaces are in), but I don't care, because it's my "thing!"

5. Ask Yourself, "Would I Be Embarrassed If ________ Saw Me Today?"
We've all had that moment: you're at the grocery store, hair unwashed, clothes wrinkled (do sweatpants wrinkle?) when you run into "THAT PERSON." Perhaps it's a former college buddy whose style is impeccable. Perhaps it's your pastor. Perhaps it's even (GASP) an old flame. Either way, as you lock eyes with that person, you immediately feel your cheeks start to redden as you realize you look like you jogged all the way to the store with the flu. Yea, it's that bad. And while we all have those moments (and sometimes don't have the energy to care- HELLO, sick children and my dog is at home with diarrhea), you can avoid them from happening frequently. Have a "go-to" errand outfit- jeans, flats, cami and blazer- that looks pulled together. Or for summer, throw on a summer dress, top it off with a cardigan, and cute sandals. No one has to know that underneath you forgot deodorant or whatever the case may be. Just be sure that should you run into Channing Tatum on the diaper aisle, you can smile and know you look your fab self!
